What degree are you studying for?
I’m studying Mathematics at Durham University. The modules in my first two years are split mainly between Pure Maths and Statistics.
What attracted you to Pacific Life Re?
From an outsider’s perspective, the prospect of beginning my actuarial career at a well-established reinsurer located right next to Tower Bridge was enough to get me interested! Extra benefits like subsidised gym membership and regular socials also sweetened the deal, but once I got a feel for the company, I knew it was where I wanted to be!
Are you studying for any other qualifications at the moment? If so how do you manage to fit it all in?
Not right now. However, getting insight into working full-time and having close contact with people who are currently studying has been invaluable as I plan to study for my Actuarial exams in the future.
Describe your job responsibilities and share which aspects you enjoy the most.
As an intern in the risk team, my work encompasses understanding the causes of past events, ensuring present operations are carried out appropriately and projecting potential future scenarios. Most of my time is spent producing regular deliverables and metrics for use by people in senior positions. This is something I particularly enjoy as it’s given me a broad overview of the business and connected me with a wide range of new people. I’ve also been given the opportunity to improve several existing processes, enabling me to be innovative and use my fresh perspective to have a meaningful impact on the team.
What are the 3 most important or surprising things you’ve learned here?
- A ‘soft skill’ I’ve learnt so far is the importance of clear communications in presenting your ideas and coordinating with colleagues
- One thing I’ve found interesting, which is specific to my role, is the diversification of risk and how the company selects its business to carefully manage the risk profile in line with our preferences.
- I was surprised to find that, although people in important positions in the company are very busy, everyone’s more than happy to spend time with you to help explain something or just have a chat.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I run for a club and am always training for the next race! Whether through track sessions, hill reps or long runs, I find it’s an excellent way to switch off after work and do something that makes you feel good. It’s been great to get involved with the Pacific Life Re Running Club and meet people within the company who share this passion and even take part in events together.
What’s the best thing about working here?
In my opinion, it’s the company-wide approach to work. There are high expectations and a shared sense of pride in performing to the best of one’s ability, which is inspiring. However, this is coupled with an understanding that work-life balance is necessary. As a result, I feel I’m being challenged to reach my potential every day, and the people I work alongside share this goal – in a sustainable and enjoyable way.
